The Elder Futhark Runes: Meaning of Sowilo

Updated: Jun 17, 2022

Sowilo is the sixteenth Elder Futhark rune. It is also the eighth and final rune of Hagal's Ætt. Sowilo is an extremely positive rune representing the sun (whereas Kenaz represents a torch in the dark). Sowilo is also worth comparing to Raidho because whereas Raidho represents the solar wagon, Sowilo represents the solar wheel. Sowilo can be seen in Raidho.

Hagal's Ætt is associated broadly with forces of destruction and change. To learn more about the ættir and runes, check out our post on The Elder Futhark Ættir and Their Significance.

Sowilo Upright Meaning

In most ancient cultures, the sun was revered as the most important deity or the ultimate good of all. There is nothing but joy, success, vitality, and happiness when Sowilo appears.

It reveals that there will be a period of happiness and confidence. Alternatively, it may point out that you should step into your creative force and refuse to let anyone else dim your light. Perhaps there are still remaining internal shadows that you must shed light on, and Sowilo is pointing out that now is the time to do that!

Sowilo Reversed Meaning

Sowilo has no reversal.

Magical Properties of Sowilo

Sowilo can bring joy and light into your life when used for magical purposes. It helps increase motivation, willpower, and self-confidence, bringing the outcome of victory in your endeavors. It is also useful if you're going through a challenging time and require guidance and healing.

Sowilo represents the individual will expressed through the hvel (or "spiritual wheels"). The term hvel parallels the Sanskrit concept of chakras, and Sowilo can help strengthen these spiritual wheels and guide you towards enlightenment.
