The Elder Futhark Runes: Meaning of Tiwaz

Updated: Jun 17, 2022

Tiwaz is the seventeenth rune in the Elder Futhark. It is also the first rune of Tyr's Ætt, and Tiwaz is synonymous with Tyr. Tyr is a Norse god of war and justice, and he sacrificed his hand to one of Loki's destructive children, the Fenris wolf, to help mitigate the future events of Ragnarök.

Tyr's Ætt is associated broadly with spiritual forces and how they relate to the experience of humanity. To learn more about the ættir and runes, check out our post on The Elder Futhark Ættir and Their Significance.

Tiwaz Upright Meaning

Tiwaz is a rune of bravery, authority, power, and passion. It is also associated with Divine Masculine energy, although, Ingwaz is more related to this association. Norse warriors used to carry Tiwaz with them into battle to help them be brave.

The rune of Tiwaz is a call to put personal fears and occupations aside for the time being and focus on taking the necessary steps to achieve your Truth. It may take an act of self-sacrifice or sacrificing something to achieve your goals (such as offering up your egoic fears to source energy). Much of the time, people identify with their fears and feel a sense of comfort from them. To let them go can feel like plunging into an abyss.

Maintain faith that you are grounded in the construct of creation. Now is the time to ditch passivity for action. Fate will favor you if you live your Truth unapologetically.

In a reading related to romance, this could be eager sexual energy and passion coming your way, although Kenaz, Gebo, or Ingwaz could more eagerly represent this.

Tiwaz Reversed Meaning

There could be a significant blockage keeping you from moving forward with your plans. Take time to slow down, reassess, and reconnect with your intuition before attempting to proceed again.

In a love reading, this could refer to the other person backing off, losing passion, or being dishonest.

Magical Properties of Tiwaz

Use Tiwaz magically to enhance willpower, victory, courage, and faith. It will help you heal and lead you to success. It also develops your ability to cut away that which doesn't serve you and develops your faith in magic.

Tiwaz is also helpful in calling in masculine energy. See also, Ingwaz.
